I have been neglecting my duties and for that I apologize. It has been a busy year so far with a Mountain Day several Open Houses as well as a trustee weekend and a Hoops Hysteria thrown in for good measure. Still the Meier Hall moves on. The scaffolding on the west and south wing is all down and bathroom walls are going up. The grotesques are now up as well so you can see them up on the west side looking down on all the people passing by. I will be adding new interior shots the the page later this week for you to see the fireplaces and bathrooms which are almost finished.

peak and tower

Scafolding is coming down and windows are going in. If you check out the photos you can see what is really happening. I know it may seem dramatic but that scafolding came down quickly.

As you may know the Lucky Class of 2013 has arrived on campus. So they have the privilage of seeing Meier Hall evolve and unveil first hand.

I have been on vacation so updates were kind of hard to make. In returning though I have had the chance to see a great deal done. Most of the facade is up and finished minus the front entrance and the main lounge windows. I have been trying to find out when we can see more of the grotesques that will be going up and hope to be able to get those images to you. Very soon we will be starting on the interior work as soon as the rest of the heating and electical work is done. It is nice to be able to walk up and down real stairs now and not the scafolding that was set up in the elevator shaft. I have pictures of the elevator shaft now which i think ar really cool.

While i have not yet seen this I do believe it will happen. The south side brick and limestone work is coming along very nicely. Many of the widows have gone in as well. You can walk up and down hallway were there used to be wide open spaces. It is begining to feel more and more like an actual dorm where before the open spaces made you think it could be anything.

One of my new favorite things to be added it the slate roof. They just aren't that common any more and it is nice to see it go on. It gives Meier Hall a classic look instantly.

Let me guess, you thought I went missing? Nope still here and sill kicking. With all the prep that has gone on these past few weeks for both commencement and reunion life has been a bit crazy. Now we have Summer registration 1 coming up this weekend. so the work never ends.

As was posted earlier the new dorm has been named it is now known as Meier Hall, named after our twelfth president, Thomas Keith Meier. The masonry work on the structural side is completed. Now the limestone and brick work is being put into place. On the southside of the building it is more than halfway up the wall. It is kind of hard to see with the purple scafolding covering the building. I have also climbed to the now tallest point on campus, the tower of Meier Hall. it is 98.4 feet from its bass and it sits on the roof of a 5 story dorm. The dry wall is goin up in a few key places as well as windows. More and more it is begining to feel like a real building that will soon be full of students. an i like theold man that I will have the privilage of saying "I remember when the was a weird statue and tennis courts there."

I will post as soon as all of the photos are up.

The Elmira College Board of Trustees announced today at the cornerstone-laying ceremony that the College’s new dorm will be named for Dr. Thomas Keith Meier, the Twelfth President of Elmira College. Meier Hall is slated to open the autumn of 2010.

Dr. Meier, the second-longest serving President of Elmira College, has been a College President for twenty-nine years and is in his twenty-second year as President of Elmira College.

“It is particularly fitting that a student-centered building is named for Tom Meier. His first priority is to provide the best collegiate experience to every Elmira College student,” said Robert Morris, Chairman of the Elmira College Board of Trustees. “I am very happy that we could honor Tom in this way. He and his wife Mila have dedicated themselves to serving the students of Elmira College.”

He earned the Ph.D. in English Literature from Columbia University and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. When he was in college at the University of Texas, he was an intercollegiate athlete and honor student, having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

In addition to six dozen scholarly articles and book reviews, Dr. Meier has published a book on Daniel Defoe, the author of Robinson Crusoe.

He, along with his wife, Dr. Mila Meier, is very active and visible on the Elmira College campus and in the greater community. They can be seen at virtually all of the performing arts events, athletic contests, and other student activities on campus. He encourages administrators to volunteer as advisors to student clubs, and he leads by example as Co-Advisor of the College Ski Club. Previously, the Elmira College Alumni Association awarded him the Medal of Merit and the Board of Trustees honored him with the title of Simeon Benjamin Professor of English Literature.
